Councilman Plans to Seek Assembly Seat

City Councilman Jon Sharkey plans to challenge Assemblyman Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) for his 37th District seat in 2000.

Sharkey, a Democrat, said Monday that he has filed a notice of his intent to run with the Fair Political Practices Commission in Sacramento.

By doing so, Sharkey can now raise money and form a committee for his campaign.

It was only last November that Strickland was elected to represent the 37th District, which includes Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Camarillo and the Conejo Valley.

“We’re basically 10 months away from the next primary, and if you look at the amount of effort it takes to mount a serious campaign, it’s really not a lot of time,” said Sharkey, a 49-year-old special events manager.

Sharkey was elected to Port Hueneme’s council in 1994 and served as mayor during 1998.
