Wen Ho Lee

Facts apparently don’t matter to Robert Scheer (Commentary, Aug. 3), who ascribes the well-publicized charges against Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee to a conspiracy among me, the Select Committee on National Security and the New York Times. Neither I nor any member of the committee had even heard of Lee when we completed our report in January.
All that changed three months later, when Lee’s firing from Los Alamos was very publicly announced by Energy Secretary Bill Richardson. The day prior to Scheer’s piece, the “CBS Evening News” broadcast my statement that it is wrong, without proof, “to juxtapose [Lee] with some of the most serious crimes that have ever been committed against our military secrets.”
