Chapman Women Top Hayward, 49-43

Polly Neves scored 16 points and April Abeyta had 13 as Chapman defeated Cal State Hayward, 49-43, in women’s basketball game Friday in Hayward.

The Panthers (5-2) led by 17 at the half, then held on despite a late run by Hayward. Hayward (0-4) was led by Keisha Robinson’s 12 points.

In the Lexington (Ky.) Transy Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament:

Oklahoma Christian 74, Concordia 73--Josh Giles scored 27 points, Brian Vander Wal had 16 and Matt Sebastian 15 for Concordia (3-2).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Portland State 62, Cal State Fullerton 40--Cal State Fullerton made only five of 21 shots in the second half and couldn’t make up a 10-point halftime deficit. Erin Whiteside scored 10 points and Megan Baskins had seven for the Titans (0-3).

UC Irvine 68, Oregon State 46--Shannon Anders scored 22 points and had five rebounds and four assists to lead host U.C. Irvine (4-1). Jeanine Horton recorded a career-high 18 points. Megan Stafford had 13 points and seven assists for the Anteaters.

Vanguard 82, Occidental 29--Marisa Emde scored 20 points, including 18 on three-pointers, to lead Vanguard (6-1) at home. Kelly Boeke had 14 points, Becki Huddle had 13 and Robbin Dittenbir and Laura Lee scored 10 each for Vanguard.

In the Speedo Cup Swimming Championships:

UC Santa Barbara men and Nevada women lead--UC Santa Barbara’s Matt Wheeler’s first-place finish in the 400 individual medley (3 minutes 59.96 seconds) helped keep the Gauchos on top. Nevada’s Limun Liu won the 100 butterfly in 53.69.

Former Mission Viejo High swimmer Attila Szilagyi had the best finish for UCI, taking seventh in the 400 IM (4:10.69).

The UC Irvine men are in seventh place overall. The Anteater women are in 15th place.
