The City Council on Monday decided to appoint a successor to member Juan M. Garcia rather than hold a special election, which could take up to a year and cost the city up to $100,000, City Atty. Richard D. Jones said.
The council has until Jan. 28 to decide on the appointment. By law, the city must fill the vacant seat 30 days from the date of resignation. Since an election probably would take more than 30 days, the council decided to appoint the fifth council member.
Candidates interested in the post can begin filing applications today at City Hall. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 17.
Garcia--who just finished a term as mayor--resigned one year short of completing his full council term.
