Patrol officers will receive $9,791 in rifles and ammunition magazines under a plan approved recently by the City Council. The weapons, which are more powerful and accurate at greater distances than standard-issue handguns and shotguns, enhance the officers’ ability to safely respond to armed suspects. The additional rifles will be assigned to selected investigators in the gangs, special investigations and regional narcotics sections.
