Lucy Tran of Los Alamitos Intermediate School took first place in Garden Grove Unified’s recent seventh- and eighth-grade spelling bee. Tran correctly spelled the word “cetacean,” or water mammals. She became the top speller among more than 6,500 intermediate school students. Other finalists included Mariele Reataza and Lance Whittington of Ralston, Monique Keleman of Fitz, Elizabeth Tran of Bell, Duc Dinh of Walton, James Le of Alamitos, and Sara Lundberg of McGarvin.
