THE MUSIC SCENE

The star-spangled banners of two off-the-mainstream musical movements will fly Independence Day weekend over the parklike Oak Canyon Ranch festival grounds.
On Saturday, the fifth annual roots-celebrating Hootenanny Festival features acts fired by blues, country music and early rock ‘n’ roll, many adding a punk wallop to their vintage sources. Bo Diddley presides in the patriarch’s role, with Mike Ness, the Reverend Horton Heat, Dave Alvin and the Royal Crown Revue among the leading inheritors on the bill.
On Sunday, This Ain’t No Picnic showcases the independent, true-alternative movement that burgeoned 15 years ago and continues to keep the rock underground bubbling today. Sonic Youth and Mike Watt, who helped shape indy rock, assume the old-guard role on a bill that includes such strong ‘90s arrivals as Sleater-Kinney, Guided By Voices, Rocket from the Crypt, Apples in Stereo and Sunny Day Real Estate.
