The Parks and Recreation Department is expected to ask the City Council at its meeting tonight to allocate $4,000 to fund four $1,000 scholar-athlete scholarships. Candidates for the scholarships must be high school seniors who are enrolled for college in the fall and must play varsity sports or participate at a regional, state or national level in an amateur sport. They also should perform community service work and have a grade-point average higher than 3.0. If the request is approved, the department would like to present the awards at the Aug. 19 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
