As a person who spends many hours a day on Los Angeles freeways, I was very saddened to read about the death of Freeway Service Patrol driver Ricardo Hernandez (June 19). Hernandez was killed on the freeway assisting a motorist.
I also learn that our state government treats the workers who perform the hazardous duties of the Freeway Service Patrol as privatized independent contractors without the benefits given to Civil Service employees.
I feel that there may be some government jobs that can be privatized. However, it is outrageous that members of the Freeway Service Patrol, who are constantly risking their own lives to help us, are employed under an independent contracting system.
