Hip Surgery for King Lasts 8 Hours

LEWISTON, Maine — Stephen King, the best-selling author who sees the sinister in the commonplace, emerged from his third and most extensive surgery Wednesday night feeling “a little wiped out,” doctors told reporters.
King’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr. David Brown, said his famous patient’s spirits were pretty good under the circumstances. “He’s a pretty resilient guy and has a lot of support from his family. . . , “ Brown said.
The operation to repair King’s right hip joint lasted more than eight hours. He sustained numerous fractures to his hip, pelvis and right leg when he was struck by a van near his home in North Lovell, Maine.
Get-well cards and e-mail from well-wishers continued to flood Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where King is being treated.
