Fur Vote

Re “Beverly Hills Rejects Initiative to Require Cruelty Tags on Furs,” May 12: The result of the election has confirmed my resolve to move away from Beverly Hills. Where else would people be so willing to accept the suffering and death of small animals to serve nothing but their own vanity? Fur labeling would not have been such a big deal.
What I find even more disturbing was the way the election was handled, at least at my polling place, which was different from usual. In this case, the ballot box was hidden behind the precinct workers, loaded with their belongings. When I had marked my ballot, a precinct worker said, “Here, I’ll take this for you.” Of course I insisted on putting it in the box myself. But what is to prevent precinct workers from looking at the ballot and not depositing those with an unfavorable vote?

It sure was sad to see that the requirement for tags on furs, stating how the animal was killed, was defeated. Caught me flatfooted, as I was just writing a requirement to do the same thing for my steaks, pork chops and chickens.
