Stuttgart Troupe to Give Ballet Premieres in O.C.

The Stuttgart Ballet has announced it will perform three works created for it when the company performs John Cranko’s “Onegin” during a Feb. 1-5 engagement at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

The troupe will give North American premieres of Mauro Bigonzetti’s “Kazimir’s Colors” and Christian Spuck’s “Dos Amores,” and the West Coast premiere of Crank’s “Initials R.B.M.E.”

“Kazimir’s Colors,” created in 1996, was inspired by the colors and forms of Russian painter Malers Kazimir Malewitsch. It is performed by 20 dancers to Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Orchestra. (Orange County audiences have already seen Bigonzetti’s evening-length “Mediterranea,” danced by Balletto di Toscana, at the Center in 1998.)

Spuck’s “Dos Amores” (Two Loves) was premiered in February. It is danced to a composite score drawing on music of Thierry de Mey and Antonio Vivaldi.

Cranko’s “Initials R.B.M.E.,” which premiered in 1972, gets its name from four great dancers who inspired the choreographer: Richard Cragun, Birgit Keil, Marcia Haydee and Egon Madson. It is danced to Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto.
