Path Plan in Peril
* There is a large abandoned railway undercrossing of the San Diego Freeway just east of Harbor Boulevard. This undercrossing has been shown on the city of Costa Mesa Master Plan of bikeways as a route to pass a future bikeway under the freeway.
The city has reviewed the request from C.J. Segerstrom & Sons to amend the city’s general plan as a part of the proposed Segerstrom Home Ranch project environmental impact report. One of the proposed changes would permanently close the undercrossing.
This undercrossing is a rare opportunity to connect a bikeway from one side of a freeway to the other side without coming in contact with the very heavy surface street traffic in that area.
The undercrossing is already there; it doesn’t have to be built. As a part of the approval process for the Home Ranch project, a route for the bike path should be included in the development plan.
