CSUCI to Help Tutor High School Students

Hoping to better prepare high school students for college, Cal State Channel Islands will expand a campaign to provide math and English assistance to university-bound youngsters in the Oxnard High School District.

Thanks to a $25,000 grant by the Ventura County Community Foundation, university officials will help 300 juniors at Oxnard-area high schools sharpen the basic skills they will need for university admission.

The money will be used to administer assessment tests to determine where students need help in English and math. University faculty members will then develop tutoring plans for each student.

The goal will be to ready the students to pass the university system’s basic proficiency exams in English and math, tests that can be stumbling blocks for some students.

“We are very pleased to be participating in this partnership with CSU Channel Islands and grateful to the Ventura County Community Foundation for their support,” said Gary Davis, assistant superintendent for the Oxford district.

The Oxnard program is the latest step in a statewide campaign to reduce the number of freshmen arriving on Cal State campuses ill-prepared for college-level math and English.
