University Wins Title in Tennis

University won its second consecutive Pacific Coast League title Wednesday, defeating Corona del Mar, 12-6, in boys’ tennis at Corona del Mar.
Freshman Jack Li swept his sets in singles for University, which won 36 of 40 games against Corona del Mar’s Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, Justin Ning and Ryan Stockwell.
The Trojans (14-0, 9-0) are top-ranked in both the Southern Section Division II poll and the county sportswriters poll. Corona del Mar is ranked second in the county.
In a nonleague match:
Servite 9, Irvine 9 (Servite wins on games 80-79)--With Servite trailing, 9-8, the Friars’ Patrick Buchanan won a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2) in his final set for the victory. Buchanan improved to 43-0 for Servite (10-7).
In Century League golf:
No. 9 Villa Park 190, El Modena 206, Orange 231--Todd Saukkola shot a par 36, including birdies on the par-four fourth and eighth holes, to earn medalist honors at Strawberry Farms for host Villa Park (10-2, 7-0).
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 204, Katella 219--Danny Min shot a two-over 37 at Anaheim Hills for host El Dorado (12-3, 8-0), which won its second consecutive league title.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 192, Whittier Christian 208--Jim Campo and John Hong each shot a one-over 36, for Orange Lutheran (10-5, 7-0) at La Mirada.
In the Serra League:
No. 2 Santa Margarita 190, Mater Dei 234--Mike Farrell and Dave Hawkins finished at one-over 37, for host Santa Margarita (14-1, 3-1) at Coto de Caza. Steve Conway and Taylor Wood each shot 38 for the Eagles.
In Sea View League softball:
Aliso Niguel 2, No. 7 Laguna Hills 0--Aliso Niguel took the upper hand in the league race in a game between the two schools that shared last year’s Pacific Coast League title, as freshman Amanda Samonte (7-1) pitched a two-hitter. Lindsay Schafer and Lindsay Jarvis each drove in fifth-inning runs for the host Wolverines (12-4-1, 2-0).
Brittany Fait (12-6) allowed only three hits for Laguna Hills (15-6, 1-1).
Woodbridge 5, Newport Harbor 0--Maritza Padilla had two hits and two RBIs, and Brittany Crouch, Brittany Davidson, and Breanna Cooley each drove in a run for visiting Woodbridge (12-7, 1-1).
In Empire League volleyball:
Cypress 3, Century 1--Brian Morris had 20 kills and Jeff Miller added 12, in the 15-9, 15-8, 12-15, 15-6 victory for host Cypress (11-0, 5-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Kyle Cooper had 11 kills for visiting Pacifica (8-2, 6-1), which won, 15-7, 15-9, 15-11.
In the Orange League:
Brea Olinda 3, Savanna 0--Andrew Cushingham had 15 kills and Jason Smith added 11 for visiting Brea Olinda (10-4, 3-1), which won, 15-6, 15-11, 15-4.
Valencia 3, Western 0--Brian Bartczak had 18 kills and Chris Franklin had 14 in the 15-5, 15-8, 16-14 victory for host Valencia (11-1, 4-0).
