LONG BEACH — A 47-year-old transient was found dead in his cell early Friday at the City Jail, where he had been booked on suspicion of public intoxication, police said.
Officer David Marander, a spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department, said jailers discovered the body of Michael Palmer during a routine cell check shortly after midnight.
Palmer, who was alone in his cell, appeared to be sleeping on the floor but couldn’t be roused, Marander said.
Jailers began lifesaving efforts and called paramedics, who took Palmer to a hospital. He was pronounced dead at about 12:40 a.m., Marander said. Police said there were no signs of injury to Palmer’s body.
Homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County coroner’s office are investigating. Police arrested Palmer Thursday evening in the Belmont Shore area.
