22 in One Family Slain by Gunmen

Gunmen killed 22 members of one family, including 14 children, in a Peruvian hamlet in the central Andes, officials said. A relative blamed the attack in Queropata, about 180 miles northeast of the capital, Lima, on neighbors. Three generations of the Caqui family were slain Monday night, but a boy, 8, and an elderly man survived, said police in the department of Huanuco. They said the motive was under investigation. But Fidel Caqui told the Radioprogramas station in Lima that his relatives were attacked by neighbors over a land dispute. “They always said they would eliminate us,” Caqui said. However, Manuel Tello, an official in the Huamalies district in Huanuco, suggested that the motive may be revenge for the killing of a member of the Amante Valverde family last year.
