An elderly Thousand Oaks couple were injured Friday when their car veered off the Ventura Freeway in Camarillo and tumbled into a concrete channel, leaving them trapped until rescue crews arrived.
Kewu Chang and his wife, Pey Fang Lin Chang, both 82, were reported in critical condition at St. John’s Regional Medical in Oxnard on Friday evening.
The Changs’ 1990 Buick was traveling northbound on the freeway near the Las Posas Road exit about 12:55 p.m. when it suddenly turned to the right, crossed two lanes of traffic and crashed through a chain-link fence before flipping over into the 25-foot channel, California Highway Patrol Officer Denny Drummond said.
Kewu Chang suffered a fractured wrist, and his wife suffered a broken hip and internal injuries.
Both Chang and his wife were wearing seat belts.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which closed two northbound lanes and backed up traffic for two miles.
