For Openers, Pepperdine Rally Turns Back Gonzaga in 10, 4-3

Danny Garcia’s run-scoring single in the 10th inning gave Pepperdine’s baseball team a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga in their West Coast Conference opener on Friday at Gonzaga.
Tony Garcia hit a game-tying home run for Pepperdine (8-8) with two out in the ninth inning.
Jeremy Coronado put the Waves ahead, 1-0, with a run-scoring single in the first.
Adam Stokey and Jared Hertz hit solo home runs for Gonzaga (5-4), and a run-scoring double by Barry Matthews in the sixth gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.
The Waves scored an unearned run in the eighth.
Daniel Haren allowed four hits in eight innings and struck out 10 for Pepperdine.
Cal Lutheran 4, La Verne 1--Nick Plancich hit a two-out, three-run home run in the eighth inning for the Kingsmen in an Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.
Tom Canale (4-0) pitched a two-hitter, struck out nine and allowed LaVerne (8-2, 8-2) only five baserunners.
Tom Galante hit his fourth home run for Cal Lutheran (10-3, 8-0).
SOFTBALL
CS Northridge 1, Louisiana-Lafayette 0--Jodi Borenstein’s fifth inning single drove in Barbara Alaniz in the Matadors’ second-round victory at the National Fast-pitch Coaches’ Assn. tournament in Columbus, Ga.
Northridge (7-8-1) defeated Hofstra, 5-3, in a first-round game earlier in the day. All of the Matadors’ runs were unearned.
Sarah Farnworth pitched a five-hitter for the Matadors, striking out eight and walking one against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Farnworth relieved Summer Richardson against Hofstra and picked up a save by pitching the last three innings.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC Santa Barbara def. CS Northridge, 15-12, 15-13, 15-7--J.P. Jandreau had 23 kills for the Matadors in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Northridge.
Eckhard Walter had 17 kills for the Matadors (5-8, 3-7), and Junior Mosones added 14.
Kevin Collins had 26 kills for the Gauchos (5-7, 4-6).
Pierce def. Santa Barbara, 16-14, 15-3, 15-12--Lance Walker had 32 kills, four blocks and eight digs, and Beau Daniels had 53 assists for the Brahmas (4-0) in a South Coast Conference victory over Santa Barbara (2-2) at Pierce.
MEN’S TENNIS
Cal Lutheran 4, Whittier 3--Sonny Romero defeated Andy Sansone, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and teamed with Travis Watkins to win at No. 1 doubles, helping the Kingsmen (3-7) win a SCIAC match at Whittier.
Romero and Watkins beat Sansone and Rahul Haksar, 8-0, in doubles.
