Neither team had an easy path to the Division I final. Esperanza edged Huntington Beach for the last playoff spot in the Sunset League, won its wild-card game handily, then won four consecutive one-goal games, including a 3-2, sudden-death overtime victory over Fountain Valley in the semifinals. Third-seeded Temecula Valley came back from the dead to win its first-round game over Claremont--tying it with 40 seconds left in injury time, then winning in overtime. Temecula Valley Coach Rob Skinner coached at University for two years.
