Bakersfield Burned by Harmful Reyes

College of the Canyons solidified its hold on first place in the Western State Conference Southern Division softball race with an 8-3 victory over Bakersfield on Thursday in Valencia.
Catcher Val Reyes broke open a 4-3 game with a grand slam in the sixth inning.
Reyes, a sophomore from Saugus High, had three hits, including a double, and seven runs batted in.
Stephanie Blaire (11-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.
Canyons (21-4, 10-0 in conference play) increased its division lead over Bakersfield (16-13, 9-2) to 1 1/2 games.
Moorpark 17, Pierce 1--Jackie Aranda pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk for the Raiders in a WSC Northern Division game at Pierce.
Aranda had two hits, including a three-run triple for Moorpark.
Lauren Casper had a run-scoring triple, double and single for the Raiders (14-12, 7-3).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Valley 7, Pierce 6--Singles by Jeremy Cartee, Matt Schwartz and Kevin O’Hara helped the Monarchs score three runs in the eighth inning for a WSC Southern Division upset at Pierce.
Schwartz had a double, single and two RBIs for the Monarchs (6-12, 1-9).
Cartee collected three hits, including a double, and one RBI.
O’Hara had two hits and one RBI.
Pierce (10-9, 6-5) had a four-run fourth inning on a two-run home run by Kona Sampaio and a two-run double by Jared Penwarden.
Canyons 7, Citrus 6--Larry Brown’s RBI single in the 10th gave the Cougars a WSC Southern Division victory at Canyons.
Reliever Sean Zortman pitched four shutout innings for Canyons (10-10, 6-5), which trailed, 6-2.
Steve Lombardi homered twice, including a two-run shot with two out in the ninth to tie the score. Eric Ballew hit his ninth homer.
The Master’s 10, Cal Baptist 4--Andy Salazar had four hits and Josh Higgins struck out nine in seven innings for the Mustangs (20-9) in a nonconference victory at Cal Baptist.
Ventura 18, Oxnard 11--Chad Anderson was three for three with five RBIs and scored three runs for the Pirates in a WSC Northern Division victory at Ventura.
Anderson’s two-run single in the started a six-run eighth inning for Ventura (12-8, 5-6).
Mike Anderson, Chad’s brother, was three for three with an RBI and scored four runs for Oxnard (11-9, 5-6).
BOYS’ TENNIS
Granada Hills 6, Chatsworth 1--Brad Steinberg (6-0) did not give up a game at No. 3 singles for the Highlanders in a West Valley League victory at Granada Hills.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Quartz Hill def. Hart, 15-6, 15-6, 14-16, 15-12--Sahael Almuallem had eight kills and 10 blocks for the Rebels at Quartz Hill.
Clint Coe added nine kills for Quartz Hill (4-1), ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times.
Village Christian def. Windward, 15-2, 15-4, 15-7--Ken Benesh had nine kills for the Crusaders (10-0), ranked No. 9, at Village Christian.
Poly def. Grant, 12-15, 11-15, 15-8, 15-5, 15-9--Oscar Garcia had 27 kills for the Parrots in a Sunset Six League victory at Grant.
Ivan Cuevas added 17 kills for Poly (7-0, 4-0).
Ronald Roiz had 27 kills for Grant (5-2, 3-1).
