Rocker Story: Shoot for the Moon

Does Bill Plaschke think he is better than John Rocker? This fomenting of hatred, this approval by Mr. Plaschke [“Rocker Gets a Hint of What’s in Store,” May 2] of the most disgusting behavior on the part of L.A. nuts at Dodger Stadium is most disturbing and really in the end quite gutless. This self-righteous grandstanding is worse than the original offense itself.

Bill Plaschke would have been right at home in the 1950s when unpopular speech was attacked--literally. Of course then, the objectionable speech was from the Left. And the Red baiters were the politically correct of their day. Perhaps soon, for the good of all of us, Plaschke will publish his Official Blacklist in The Times so we can all help him run out of town those who keep Bill Plaschke’s America from being pure.

But wait a minute, that type of thing could never happen again, could it?

I have a feeling that Bill Plaschke, L.A.’s guardian of political correctness, won’t be happy until John Rocker is publicly tarred and feathered, boiled in oil, strung up by his thumbs with piano wire, flogged, stoned and beheaded, with Rocker’s head presented to Randy Harvey on a silver platter.

Rocker stuck his foot in his mouth, apologized and was punished. It’s over! Enough already! Find another politically correct cause to champion.

With all that has been written about the “mooning” of John Rocker at Dodger Stadium, I think the entire situation can best be summed up by stating that there were definitely two asses on the field.

I would prefer to believe that Rick Monday spoke for this city when he prevented a moron from burning our flag in the Dodger Stadium outfield. I think the people of this city are a bit more sophisticated than to assent to a reporter’s ramblings that someone pulling down his pants speaks for this city.

One thing that characterizes John Rocker far more than his unfortunate running off at the mouth keeps getting buried in the frenzy. For years, Rocker and his parents hosted young players who needed a place to live while they were getting on their feet financially. The Rockers hosted players who were black, Hispanic, from all sorts of nationalities, and race or origin was never an issue. Some of their house guests stayed for months, and are eternally grateful to Rocker and his family. Rocker’s actions speak far louder than his words. Wise up, and give the man a break.

Actually, Angelenos were downright well-mannered toward John Rocker compared to their treatment of the U.S. men’s soccer team when it played Mexico. There was a good deal more criminality on the latter occasion.
