SAN MATEO — A famous red barn in rural San Mateo County is gearing up for a make-over, though workers are trying not to disturb a cluster of rare bats that have made the barn their home.
The historic barn is home to at least 50 pallid bats, which have fur the color of dead oak leaves and a 14-inch wing span. The California Department of Fish and Game lists them as a “species of concern.”
Bat experts say the red barn may be the only pallid-bat maternity roost in the region. As a result, the restoration will be gentle.
