Revival Fails on Driver Pulled From Water

A Huntington Beach man died Tuesday after his car plunged into the water and sank at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve off Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said.
David Ben Rabin, 48, never regained consciousness and was declared dead at the scene. Motorists who saw the incident pulled him from the submerged vehicle after about five minutes underwater. Paramedics arrived just after the man was retrieved and unsuccessfully tried to revive him.
“We just don’t know what happened,” said Lt. Bill Peterson, a spokesman for the Huntington Beach Police Department. “Right now, it’s just guesses.”
The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. as Rabin drove west on Pacific Coast Highway in a small, older-model, sport-utility vehicle, towing a boat on a trailer, Peterson said. About a mile east of Warner Avenue, the car veered right, crossed the shoulder and plunged into about 15 feet of water.
