Rwandan infantry and helicopters attacked Hutu militiamen and their allies crossing into the country from Congo, and a military spokesman said 150 of the infiltrators were killed.
Local residents alerted the army after at least 300 militiamen and former government soldiers sneaked into the area of Mutura, 50 miles northwest of the capital, Kigali, on Tuesday night, said Col. Jean-Bosco Kazura.
Using helicopter gunships and ground troops, the army attacked at noon, killing about 150 people and capturing 24, Kazura said. The casualty figures could not be independently verified.
