Man Guilty of 1st-Degree Murder in 1997 Robbery

A 27-year-old Los Angeles man has been convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in a 1997 shooting of a couple sitting in a parked car on Mulholland Drive, authorities said.
Remi King was convicted Wednesday of fatally shooting Dario Torres of Burbank and attempting to kill his companion, Hazel Maroto, on Oct. 18, 1997, after King and a partner tried to rob the couple, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.
Torres was shot in the head as he tried to drive away. The vehicle plunged 160 feet down a ravine in the Beverly Glen area. Maroto survived the crash and called police on a cellular telephone.
King was also convicted of two counts of attempted robbery stemming from the incident. His partner, 24-year-old Glynn Ward, is serving a life sentence without parole for his conviction last year in a separate trial on similar charges, Gibbons said.
King, who also faces life in prison without parole, returns for sentencing July 19 at Los Angeles Superior Court, Gibbons said.
