47 Top Officials Jailed After Corruption Trial

Libya’s finance minister, a senior economic advisor and a number of Central Bank employees have been convicted and sentenced to prison terms in the nation’s biggest corruption trial, newspapers reported.
A total of 47 defendants were found guilty in the case, connected to loans worth $300 million that were illegally given by the Central Bank to businessmen in Benghazi, 400 miles east of Tripoli, the capital.
The People’s Court in Tripoli found the defendants guilty Sunday on charges including bribery, forgery and damaging public property. It handed down prison terms of up to 16 years, the papers reported.
