In boys’ water polo:
Newport Beach Newport Harbor 10, Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 6--The Cougars traded swim caps in an effort to fool their former coach, but the defending Division I champions pulled away in the fourth quarter in a first-round playoff match.
Jason Lynch took over the Sailors’ program after seven seasons at Capistrano Valley, but the numbers change didn’t confuse him.
“Like that was going to work?” Lynch said of the switched caps. “I know those players too well.”
Newport Harbor (15-14) held a 5-4 lead when Nathan Weiner scored as the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter. The Sailors kept the momentum into the fourth, scoring four goals in the first three minutes to take a 10-4 lead.
Michael Bury scored four goals and Weiner had three for Newport Harbor. Pat Cary had three goals to lead Capistrano Valley (15-14).
