Empty English Classes

Re “More English Classes, Por Favor ,” Commentary, Nov. 25: I am an English as a second language instructor in the Lodi adult school, part of the San Joaquin Valley’s Lodi Unified School District. The school offers classes day and night and in all corners of the community.
In the 15 years I have been a teacher, our classes have been poorly attended. Except for the brief period during the amnesty in the late 1980s, when 40 hours of English instruction was a mandatory step for a green card, I have seen little interest in learning English. Many sign up, but when class begins, the seats are empty.
