Brady, playing on a sprained ankle suffered in the AFC championship game, had modest Super Bowl passing statistics. However, he didn’t throw an interception, completed passes to seven receivers and was at his best when it counted the most--the nine-play, 53-yard drive that started with 1:21 left and set up Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning 48-yard field goal.

2001 SEASON

Brady was third string and threw only three passes in 2000, but became the starter after Drew Bledsoe suffered internal bleeding from a hit by the New York Jets’ Mo Lewis in Week 2. Brady remained the starter even after Bledsoe was cleared to play and led New England to six consecutive victories to close out the regular season and an 11-5 record that netted the AFC East championship. While best remembered for the play that officials ruled his apparent fumble an incomplete pass late in the fourth quarter of a divisional playoff game with the Oakland Raiders, Brady led two drives in the snow that resulted in game-tying and game-winning field goals by Vinatieri.
