Locust Swarms Prompt a State of Emergency
- Share via
Russia has declared a state of emergency in at least 10 regions where locusts are swarming through farmlands, devouring crops, Russian television reported.
Locusts have been blamed for destroying tens of millions of acres of farmland in those areas over the last decade.
The report did not say how much land had been affected by the latest swarms but did say huge areas of the eastern Siberian regions of Buryatia and Irkutsk had been ruined and the problem was expected to spread.
Officials have not yet specified what measures were planned, but they said it would be difficult to spray all the affected areas.
