Throngs Celebrate Victory Over Sweden

Thousands streamed into the streets of Dakar, the country’s capital, singing, cheering and screaming after Senegal upset Sweden, 2-1, in overtime at Oita, Japan, to reach the quarterfinals.
The game-winning goal by Henri Camara 14 minutes into overtime set off what has become a joyous ritual the last two weeks. A din of honking horns and shrill whistles filled the city.
Men, women and children ran full speed to the main boulevards, joining crowds dancing and bouncing up and down waving flags.
Senegalese piled by the dozens into cars and drove through the city waving the nation’s red, green and yellow flag.
