1999 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras, Southern Rhone, France.
Vacqueyras used to be classed as Cotes-du-Rhone Villages, one step up from basic Cotes-du-Rhone, but the best wines of this pretty village near Gigondas have always had more concentration and power than its neighbors’. A dozen years ago, the French recognized that by giving Vacqueyras its own appellation.

Wine price--The price for the Wine of the Week in today’s Food section is incorrect in some editions of the newspaper. The 1999 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras sells for about $12.
The 1999 Domaine La Garrigue shows what a beguiling wine Vacqueyras can be in a great vintage. This one has everything I love in a southern Rhone--beautiful color, explosive fruit, lots of earthy character and a soupcon of the character the French call sauvage, or wild.
About $12. Available at Beverage Warehouse in Marina del Rey, (310) 306-2822; John and Pete’s Liquor in West Hollywood, (310) 657-3080; Topline Wine & Spirits in Glendale, (818) 500-9670; and Wine Exchange in Orange, (714) 974-1454.
