Senior running back Adam Sandoval rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries and Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe defeated Whittier Pioneer, 35-16, in a Del Rio League game Friday at Pioneer.
Santa Fe (6-2, 3-0 in league), the defending league champion, led throughout as Sandoval scored on a seven-yard run and two one-yard runs.
His last touchdown gave the Chiefs their final margin of victory with 4:24 to play and effectively squelched a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by Pioneer (7-1, 2-1), No. 1 in the Southern Section Division VII rankings going into the game.
The Titans scored on their first two possessions of the last quarter to close within 21-16 with 9:54 to play, but Santa Fe, ranked No. 2 in Division VII, answered with consecutive scoring drives.
