Businesses Protest FCC Rule on ‘Junk’ Faxes

Several business groups asked the U.S. government to relax a new rule that prohibits “junk” faxes, arguing that it would make it too difficult for them to stay in touch with their customers.
The Federal Communications Commission tightened an existing ban on unsolicited faxes in June, requiring businesses to get express written permission before faxing out advertisements.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Assn. of Manufacturers and several other business groups said the new rule was written too broadly because it would apply to nonprofit groups announcing conventions and seminars, as well as fly-by-night marketers that tie up fax lines with unwanted pitches for vacation packages and inkjet cartridges.
An FCC spokesman said the commission was reviewing the rule and could change it or refine it before it takes effect Aug. 25.
