Meeting Planned on Landfill Expansion

The state Integrated Waste Management Board has scheduled an information session Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Sun Valley Middle School, 7330 Bakman Ave., to answer questions about a proposed expansion of Bradley Landfill.
Waste Management Inc. has applied for permission to raise the allowable height of the dump by 10 feet, from 1,000 feet above sea level to 1,010 feet.
On Jan. 14, after state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) said the community wasn’t adequately notified, the board agreed to postpone a vote until March and to hold a public hearing in February.
Homeowner activists oppose the 10-foot expansion and a separate application to add another 43 feet to the allowable height, saying authorities should instead close the dump as an eyesore and a possible health hazard.
