The International Committee of the Red Cross suspended its massive operations in Afghanistan after the killing of Swiss water engineer Ricardo Munguia, 39, in the country’s south. He was the first international aid worker to be killed since a U.S.-led military campaign expelled the Taliban regime in late 2001.
The killing “came as a shock,” said Simon Schorno, spokesman at the Red Cross headquarters in Kabul, the Afghan capital. No one has taken responsibility and no arrests have been made.
