From Times Staff and Wire Reports
In May, all city patrol officers will begin carrying battery-powered stun guns along with their nightsticks, handcuffs and service weapons.
The department has ordered 629 Taser guns that are capable of delivering 50,000-volt jolts.
Chief Rob Davis said it would be up to officers to decide in volatile situations whether to temporarily disable assailants with the Taser or use their handgun.
San Jose joins other large police departments such as those in Sacramento and Phoenix in giving Tasers to each patrol officer.
