Women a Majority in Harvard Freshman Class

The number of women admitted to Harvard University for the fall freshman class slightly surpassed the number of men for the first time in the Cambridge school’s history, officials said.
Those admitted included 1,016 women and 1,013 men culled from 19,750 applications.
Harvard officials have been trying to raise the number of women on campus for decades.
William R. Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid, said the ratio of men to women was 4-to-1 when he arrived in the 1960s.
