Bridge Blast Works Better Than Expected

An explosion meant to demolish one section of an obsolete Mississippi River bridge unexpectedly brought down the rest of the span too.
Hundreds of observers watched as the steel structure jackknifed into the water, rumbling the Cape Girardeau riverfront. River traffic was stopped before the explosion, and the bridge collapse was not expected to prolong the shutdown.
