A 23-year-old woman attending a journalism convention in Atlanta died, possibly from an illness she had contracted while working in Africa, event organizers said.
Akilah Amapindi was at the National Assn. of Black Journalists convention when she became ill, said Bryan Monroe, the group’s president.
Amapindi, a graduate of Kenyon College in Ohio, was working for the Namibian Broadcasting Corp. in the African nation until July 21. Doctors said she may have contracted malaria.
Amapindi was taken to a hospital Tuesday and died Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
