Residents Free Officers They Had Held Hostage

A mob of residents who had taken three state police officers hostage in the town of Santiago Atlatongo released the trio unharmed after hours of negotiation.
Hundreds of people in the town battled police a day earlier after four officers investigating illegal dumping tried to take several people into custody, one of them a justice of the peace. Those arrested in the rioting were released, but some still faced charges, authorities said.
