Re “Mexico’s Border-Crossing Tips Anger Some in U.S.,” Jan. 4: Criminal behavior is not only condoned by Mexico’s corrupt government, but officials distribute how-to manuals. We are at war with the wrong nation. Our real enemy is next door.

Mexico should be ashamed of printing booklets that help its citizens violate our immigration laws. But I suppose “shame” isn’t part of the Mexican vocabulary. I can’t use the words to best describe the Mexican government and its illegal citizens, at least not here.

It is obvious that Mexico has a conflict of interest in stopping illegal immigration into the U.S., as more than $12 billion annually is sent there by Mexicans living in the U.S. The Mexican government could crack down on “coyotes” who smuggle illegals across the border. Many of those who die in the desert have been abandoned by their callous guides. They openly solicit customers at bus stations in border towns, under the eyes of Mexican authorities. The issuance of the guidebook clearly condones illegal immigration into the U.S. It is clear that the Mexican government benefits from open borders; that’s the reason President Vicente Fox advocates this policy.
