Nation Marks 56 Years of Communist Rule

Tens of thousands of Chinese gathered in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to mark the 56th anniversary of Communist rule, waving flags and posing for pictures amid tight security.
Police bomb squads were out in force, and human rights groups said authorities were expelling people with grievances from the capital to prevent disruptions.
On Friday, Premier Wen Jiabao vowed to press forward with rapid development and touted the Communist Party’s supremacy. Though buoyed by a booming economy, the party faces protests over corruption, environmental degradation and China’s income gap.
