Controversial Goal Wins It for Canucks

Matt Cooke scored a disputed goal 4:21 into the third period to give Vancouver a 3-2 victory over Phoenix on Thursday night in Vancouver, Canada.

After being stymied by goaltender Curtis Joseph, the Canucks broke a 2-2 tie by pushing him and the puck into the net. Joseph stopped Ed Jovanovski on a breakaway, but momentum carried both of them into the net while a charging Cooke knocked the puck in just as the net was dislodged.

Referee Michael McGeough waved the goal off, but the call was overturned after a video review.

Calgary 3, Edmonton 1 -- Chuck Kobasew scored two goals, including the winner, at home for the Flames. Edmonton has dropped five straight.

Florida 3, Washington 2 -- Anthony Stewart and Mike Van Ryn scored power-play goals at home for the Panthers.

N.Y. Islanders 5, N.Y. Rangers 4 -- Mark Parrish scored twice for the host Islanders, who overcame Jaromir Jagr’s first Ranger hat trick.

Buffalo 4, Boston 3 -- J.P. Dumont deflected Teppo Numminen’s shot into the net to break a third-period tie for the Sabres in Boston.

New Jersey 6, Pittsburgh 3 -- The host Penguins extended their winless streak to seven games, and rookie Sidney Crosby went without a point for the first time.

Toronto 5, Carolina 4 -- Ken Klee scored a power-play goal 4:44 into overtime and the host Maple Leafs won their fourth straight game.

Tampa Bay 6, Atlanta 0 -- Fredrik Modin scored two goals in Atlanta.

Nashville 3, St. Louis 2 -- Tomas Vokoun turned away both shots he faced in the shootout and the host Predators won their sixth straight.
