Eric Lindros scored the only goal in a shootout, and Ed Belfour made 49 saves to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night at Toronto.
After Lindros scored on Toronto’s first attempt in the shootout, Boston’s Joe Thornton beat Belfour with a deke but his shot hit off the post.
The fans chanted “Eddie! Eddie! after Belfour made a series of impressive saves in overtime and in the shootout.
Detroit 6, Columbus 2 -- Brendan Shanahan and Pavel Datsyuk each scored two goals to help the Red Wings win at Columbus, Ohio.
Manny Legace tied the NHL mark of nine wins by a goaltender in October set by Vancouver’s Kirk McLean in 1991-92 (9-2-1) and also matched by Toronto’s Felix Potvin (9-1-0) and Philadelphia’s Dominic Roussel (9-1-0), both in 1993-94.
Carolina 3, Ottawa 2 -- The Hurricanes rallied from a two-goal deficit at Raleigh, N.C, to hand the Senators their first loss of the season.
The Nashville Predators (7-0-0-0) are the only remaining unbeaten team in the NHL.

Atlanta’s Eric Boulton was suspended for six games by the NHL for elbowing Tampa Bay’s Paul Ranger in the head in a game Thursday.
