Paying the tab for being unprepared

We can see the truth of the often repeated warning that in a time of disaster, it takes days for government help to reach victims.
Time to muster forces and supplies in difficult logistical situations, added to an almost total loss of delivery infrastructure, has left many victims in New Orleans on their own for days.
The wisdom of having a disaster kit prepared in advance should be obvious. Time to update those earthquake kits, Californians.
As we have seen last week, you never know.

Federal funding to maintain New Orleans’ levies and floodwalls fell drastically over the last two years. Where did the taxpayers’ money go instead?
Well, we have also just learned that the cost of our continuing operations in Iraq is not $4 billion a month as reported earlier, but closer to $6 billion (Aug. 31).
