Brewers Squeeze Past Padres, 3-2

Brady Clark’s suicide squeeze scored Corey Hart from third with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Brewers a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Milwaukee.

Wes Helms singled against Akinori Otsuka (1-6) to lead off the inning. Hart ran for Helms and stole second, and then moved to third on Chad Moeller’s sacrifice.

After pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks walked, Clark bunted and Otsuka attempted a late flip to catcher Miguel Olivo, but Hart scored standing.

Milwaukee starter Doug Davis couldn’t hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, failing to win for the 14th consecutive start.

Eric Young led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by Dave Roberts and scored the tying run on a bloop single by Mark Loretta.

San Francisco 3, Arizona 2 -- Matt Cain yielded only three hits in seven innings at Phoenix for his first major league victory, and the Giants won their fifth in a row to move to within 5 1/2 games of San Diego in the West Division.

The Diamondbacks, who were in second place on Wednesday, lost their fifth in a row to fall eight games off the pace. They are 9-22 since moving into a first-place tie with the Padres on July 31.

Cincinnati 8, Atlanta 3 -- Jason LaRue’s pinch-hit grand slam capped a five-run 12th inning at Atlanta to help the Reds end a five-game losing streak. Austin Kearns hit a run-scoring double against Dan Kolb (3-7) to give the Reds a 4-3 lead. The Reds’ Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 536th homer, tying Mickey Mantle for 12th on the career list. His 35th of the season came in the first inning.

Chicago 2, Pittsburgh 0 -- Jerome Williams pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning, and the Cubs completed a three-game sweep at Pittsburgh. Williams (5-7), who got only five outs in his previous start against the Dodgers, walked two and struck out five in 7 1/3 innings.

St. Louis 4, Houston 1 -- At Houston, Jason Marquis (11-13) limited the Astros to five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the third complete game of his career, all this season. The Astros remained tied with Florida, half a game behind wild-card leader Philadelphia.

New York 7, Florida 1 -- Jae Seo pitched seven strong innings, Cliff Floyd hit a two-run homer and the Mets salvaged the finale of their three-game series at Miami. Seo (7-1) limited the Marlins to one run and five hits.

Washington 6, Philadelphia 1 -- Esteban Loaiza (10-10) struck out 11 and took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Preston Wilson and Brian Schneider hit three-run homers at Washington.
