Damien Upends Los Altos

La Verne Damien’s turnaround season continued Friday night when the Spartans survived a nonleague shootout with Hacienda Heights Los Altos and prevailed, 42-35, at Damien.
Damien improved to 3-0, with previous victories over Covina Charter Oak and Claremont. The Spartans lost to all three teams to begin last season, when they started 0-5.
“Our team has been playing with confidence all season,” Coach Scott Morrison said. “But you can’t help but gain more with each victory.”
Damien had leads of 14-0 and 21-7 in the first quarter, but Los Altos came back with big plays, including a 95-yard kickoff return by Anthony Pedregon and a 69-yard run by Rudy Martinez.
Damien broke a 28-28 tie with consecutive scoring drives, but Los Altos (2-1) once again came back and was driving late in the game. Damien’s defense stopped Los Altos on fourth-and-six with about 2 minutes 30 seconds left.
