Getting an education on firefighters’ morale

Re “Papers Describe Agency’s Morale Trouble,” Feb. 15
One component of the morale problem in the Los Angeles Fire Department has nothing to do with race or gender but has no obvious solution. Many of the younger generation of firefighters may be better educated than their superiors, thus causing them to question orders from those they consider to be less educated. Part of the problem is that the pay and benefits are so good that college graduates are applying for jobs that historically did not require a high school education.
I read of one instance in which a fire department had hundreds of applicants for a few positions. With a larger percentage of the population being college graduates, there are not enough people with higher education degrees willing to be grunts.
